Moving Abroad checklist

Moving abroad is both a huge step and an exciting opportunity. In the beginning, it can feel overwhelming, you’re dealing with paperwork, housing, finances, and so much more. It’s easy to feel a little lost, especially when moving to a completely new country.
To make the process easier, I’ve put together a moving abroad checklist. This checklist helped me when I moved to Spain. Depending on where you are moving to (and from), you’ll want to adjust it to your own situation. However, It may help to you to get started and get organized. This checklist is intended as a guide. I have included a blank template for you to print of and fill in as well.
1. Paperwork & Documents
Before you start packing boxes, make sure your paperwork is in order:
Research your destination – laws, culture, and practical living information.
Renew your passport if it’s close to expiring.
Check visa requirements well in advance.
Gather important documents such as birth certificates, diplomas, marriage license, and medical records.
💡 Pro tip: Scan your documents and store them safely in the cloud for easy access.
2. Housing & Property
Where you’ll live is one of the biggest decisions you’ll face:
Decide whether to rent or buy in your new country.
Sell or store belongings that won’t make the move.
Cancel or transfer utilities such as electricity, water, gas, and internet.
3. Health & Insurance
Your health should always be a top priority:
Purchase travel and health insurance suitable for international living.
Check medication availability abroad and bring prescriptions.
Learn the emergency numbers and healthcare system in your new country.
4. Finances & Banking
Managing money abroad requires a bit of preparation:
Notify your bank about your relocation.
Set up an international-friendly bank account and credit cards.
Research opening a local bank account in your new country.
Arrange mail forwarding to a friend, relative, or service.
If you own a car, decide whether to sell, ship, or register it (and check if you need an international driver’s license).
5. Packing & Belongings
Packing smartly will save you time, money, and stress:
Bring essentials you can’t easily find abroad.
Arrange shipping for large items if needed.
Cancel or pause subscriptions like TV, gym, or streaming services.
6. Pets (If needed)
Taking your furry friend with you? Don’t forget:
Check country requirements such as vaccines, microchips, or quarantine rules.
Book travel arrangements for your pet early.
Prepare their travel crate and get them used to it.
Make sure vaccinations and documents are up to date.
7. Arrival Prep
Once the move is complete, set yourself up for success:
Get local currency before departure (avoid airport exchange rates).
Buy a local SIM card or eSIM for easy communication.
Learn a few basic phrases in the local language.
Join expat or local community groups online.
Most importantly: relax and enjoy your new adventure 🎉.
Moving abroad doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right preparation and this checklist in hand, you’ll feel more organized and confident about your relocation. Take it step by step, and soon enough you’ll be settling into your new home and enjoying the journey ahead.
